| Saint Elizabeth's East Campus

Narrative Description
The redevelopment of the Saint Elizabeth’s East Campus represents an opportunity to continue to serve District residents and the nation by building on its storied history, respecting the natural, scenic, cultural and historic landscapes. This redevelopment opportunity will support connections between people, families, businesses, agencies and institutions, opening up the campus and strengthening its connection to the rest of the city. Additionally, residents will be provided with open spaces, diverse urban character, mixed uses, versatile transportation systems, a variety of housing options, and retail and community amenities.
The 173-acre East Campus was transferred to the District in 1987 as part of the deregulation of mental healthcare. The transfer included a requirement the campus be used "for the provision of mental health services". 86 acres of the East Campus is planned for redevelopment by the District. Part of the site, not to be offered for redevelopment, will be occupied by a new mental health facility.
