Tax Abatement

NPR HQ

One of the District’s most utilized tools is its tax abatements. Ordinarily, these agreements are used to either encourage a company or nonprofit organization to locate its headquarters within the city by abating both future property taxes as well as taxes on materials during construction and build-out. They are also used to encourage housing development in emerging markets or retail development along targeted corridors. Recently, the District provided NPR, the nation’s most prestigious public broadcasting organization to move its 800-person headquarters to the NoMA neighborhood.
