Walker Jones

 

Narrative Description

The Walker Jones Project calls for a new 125,000 SF Pre K-8 school that is being constructed on a 4.5 acre parcel that is bounded by New Jersey Avenue NW, Pierce Street NW, 1st Street NW and L Street NW. The building footprints is 50,400 SF, 100,000 SF School, 20,000 SF Recreation Center, and 5,000 SF Library. This school was designed for a capacity of approximately 850 students and the school will replace two existing DCPS facilities on the site and adjacent to it - Terrell Junior High School & Walker Jones Elementary School. The project is being developed through the Deputy Mayor's Office for Planning and Economic Development and will be occupied and operated by DC Public Schools, DC Public Libraries and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Next Steps

  • Construction activities commenced on the site in March of 2008 and as of October 31, the project is just over 40 percent complete.
  • School will open for classes in August 2010
  • The Library and Recreation Center are scheduled to open December 2010.
