New Public Corporation to Lead the Revitalization of the Anacostia Waterfront
(Washington, DC) Today, the DC Council approved legislation as proposed by Mayor Anthony Williams to establish the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC). This new public entity will be charged with leading the revitalization of the District’s Anacostia Waterfront. Mayor Williams said, “I applaud the Council for supporting this important legislation which assures the revitalization of the Anacostia Waterfront. I commend Chairman Cropp, Councilmember Brazil, and Councilmember Ambrose for their leadership in moving this legislation forward.”
The AWC will coordinate the implementation of a 25-year plan that calls for the redevelopment of land currently either underutilized or not utilized at all. Additionally, the AWC will also help coordinate efforts to a clean up the river with the goal of making the river swimable by 2025.
Already, more than $1 billion of public and private investment has been committed to waterfront-related projects. Over the next 5 years the AWC will coordinate a public investment strategy which will facilitate the construction of over 3 million square feet of new office space, over 4,500 units of new housing, 32 acres of new public parkland, and a 20-mile Riverwalk along on both sides of the river. These new uses are expected to generate up to $1.5 billion in new tax revenues over the next twenty years, in addition to over $4 billion in private investment. |
