DC Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force Holds Public Meetings

(Washington, DC) On Tuesday, September 13, 2005, the Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force will hold the first in a series of public meetings to gain community input on housing recommendations for the District of Columbia.

The meetings will include breakout sessions that allow residents to comment on plans to increase the supply of District housing by 55,000 units by 2020 to accommodate 100,000 additional people in the city’s population, the District’s use of federal programs and its own resources to ensure that at least a third of the new units are affordable, the implementation of a local rent subsidy program, and an increase in a portion of the deed recordation tax dedicated to the Housing Production Trust Fund from 15 to 20 percent.

Mayor Anthony A. Williams and the Council of the District of Columbia established the Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force 2004 to recommend public policies on the housing needs for both current District residents and the anticipated increase of 100,000 additional people. The CHSTF final report, Homes for an Inclusive City: A Comprehensive Housing Strategy for Washington, DC, will lay out a ten-year blueprint of the goals, methods, schedule, and estimated public and private funds needed to improve District housing for residents and ensure better access to affordable units.

Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Stanley Jackson, whose office has staffed this effort, encourages residents and stakeholders to participate in the public meetings.
