| What We Do
The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) is charged with executing Mayor Adrian Fenty's economic development strategy. That means encouraging growth and investment across the District, providing and preserving affordable housing, attracting high quality retail to our neighborhoods and Center City and revitalizing our waterfronts. Our goal is to become a world-class, globally competitive city. Our job is to bring federal, nonprofit and private partners together to expand the District's tax bases, attract and retain businesses of all sizes, bring good-paying jobs for residents and strengthen business climate.
Our Focus
-
Real Estate Development: Our office manages a portfolio of economic development projects worth more than $13 billion. These projects, spread across every one of the District’s eight wards, vary in size from a $10 billion initiative to reclaim the long-neglected Anacostia Waterfront to small-scale neighborhood retail.
-
Neighborhood Revitalization: We have a number of programs and redevelopment projects aimed at rebuilding the District’s retail corridors and creating stable and vibrant neighborhoods.
-
Business Incentives: We offer a full-slate of tax and development incentives for businesses and nonprofit organizations of all sizes. These tools are designed not only to encourage new investment in the District’s neighborhoods and downtown core, but create an environment where organizations existing organizations can expand and prosper.
-
New Opportunities and Community Benefits: We work hard to ensure that every District investment yields real benefits for residents and local businesses alike. That means projects must include job opportunities for residents, promote workforce development and create meaningful contracting and investment opportunities for local businesses. We leverage both private sector and government investments to improve our infrastructure and build first-class schools, libraries, recreation centers and parks.
-
Connect Business and Government: Our office coordinates a cluster of government agencies that regularly work with the business community. These agencies include the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs; Department of Employment Services; Department of Housing and Community Development; Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking; Department of Small and Local Business Development; Commission of Arts and Humanities; Office of Motion Picture and TV Development and the Office of Planning.
