Revenue Bond Program Partners with Companies to Host Seminar Series

(Washington, DC) Eric Price, Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development announced a series of free training programs hosted by the DC Revenue Bond Program. The seminars, each geared toward a different industry sector, are designed to inform the public about below-market interest financing opportunities. The first seminar will be held on June 18 and will resume in September on a bi-monthly basis.

The seminar is sponsored by DC Revenue Bond Program, the DC Marketing Center, Arent Fox Kintner Plotkin & Kahn, Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, First Union, Government Finance Group, the DC Building Industry Association and the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives.

"Since 1998, the program has issued more than $2.6 billion of tax-exempt securities to finance the acquisition, purchase and rehabilitation of buildings and equipment for qualified organizations throughout our Nation's Capital," said Mayor Anthony Williams.

Approximately $547 million (21 percent) of the tax-exempt securities has benefited more than 25 associations and professional societies. The associations and professional societies seminar will feature a panel of past program participants, including representatives from the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the National Academy of Sciences, the Greater Washington Society of Association Executives, bond attorneys, financial analysts, and revenue bond program staff.

"Despite our growing client base, a large percentage of domestic nonprofit and for-profit entities remain unaware of their eligibility, or have little knowledge about the most significant cost savings associated with tax-exempt bond financing," said Michael Hodge, Director of the DC Revenue Bonds and Enterprise Zones programs. "These seminars are being held to help fulfill this need."

"The program should appeal to a very broad constituency," said Eric Price. "We're inviting numerous organization executives and service organizations, financial officers, community development corporations, real estate brokers, public-finance attorneys, developers, accountants and bankers. We strongly encourage the attendance of those who wish to learn more about bond-financing."

The June 18 seminar, Tax-Exempt Financing for Associations, Professional Societies and Non-Profits, will be held from 9 - 11:30 am at the new headquarters of International Institute of International Economics (1750 Massachusetts Avenue, NW Cedar G. Peterson Conference Center), a building financed through the DC Revenue Bond Program.

The National Academy of Sciences, the National Capital Chapter of the American Red Cross, Public Welfare Foundation, American Chemical Society, World Wildlife Fund, United Planning Organization, National Child Daycare Association, Inc., have been former Revenue Bond Program participants.

Future seminars include:

  • Commercial Development (Enterprise Zone Bonds, Tax Increment Financing) (September 2002)*
  • Secondary Schools (Public Charter and Private Schools) (November 2002)*
  • Art and Cultural Institutions (January 2003)*
  • Higher Education and Health Care (March 2003)*
