District Begins Turning New York Avenue Metro Area into Transit Center
(Washington, DC) The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) today released a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the redevelopment of the site located at Florida Avenue and 2nd St., NE, near the New York Avenue Metro Station. The development of the site and metro station is part of the growth of "NoMa" (north of Massachusetts Avenue), the North Capitol corridor and Mount Vernon Triangle.
"Development is moving toward New York Avenue-and now is the [time] to get in while there's still land to build on," Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Eric Price said. "With an impending critical mass of people, and the right mix of business and retail options, this site can be the next major transit center in our city."
City officials envision the site as part of a growing, vibrant and active downtown, with retail and services for Metro riders, office workers and area residents. The site might include eateries to serve the new GSA Federal Headquarters Building (formerly known as ATF). The site could also accommodate live/work units, space for smaller firms and start-ups, and cultural components.
In addition to the Florida Avenue site, there are several projects in the area:
- The recently-completed Gateway development includes the Department of Employment Services (DOES) and an area marketing center.
- The new GSA Federal Building, with up to 1,100 occupants, is scheduled to open in early 2005. GSA also intends to develop approximately 9,000 square feet of retail space here.
- Just south of GSA Federal Building, the Penrose Group intends to develop 2 million square feet for potential commercial and/or retail use.
RFEI's are due by Thursday, May 22, 2003 at 4 pm. The redevelopment of the Florida Avenue site is part of Mayor Williams' commitment to his key economic development priorities: promoting "opportunity for all" by bringing economic development to every corner of the city and creating the resources to attract 100,000 new residents to the District.
