"reSTORE DC" Begins its Second Year of Commercial Revitalization

(Washington, DC) The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED), today announced the application workshop dates for the 2003 DC Main Streets initiative, a community-based commercial revitalization program and part of reStore DC. The dates run throughout Feb. 2003. DC Main Streets provides a comprehensive package of technical and financial assistance to improve selected neighborhood business districts using resources to manage commercial districts, implement activities, and achieve stakeholder goals. "Bringing economic development to every corner of the city means supporting local businesses in the communities that they serve," said Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Eric Price. "The majority of the District's businesses are local business-and they're an integral part of the unique fabric of their neighborhoods."

2002's Winners

Last year, five District neighborhoods were designated as local Main Street programs::

  • 14th and U Streets, NW
  • Ward 1 / Ward 2
  • Fourteenth Street Heights
  • Ward 4
  • North Capitol Street
  • Ward 5
  • Barracks Row (8th Street, SE)
  • Ward 6
  • H Street, NE
  • Ward 6
Valued at approximately $420,000 per recipient, Main Street resources are concentrated in the first five years of a neighborhood's local program. A smaller amount of technical and financial assistance is available to participants that continue to operate after their first five years. DC Main Streets is based on the national Main Street Four-Point Approach, which emphasizes organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring. Main Streets is part of Mayor Williams' ongoing, comprehensive revitalization program called reStore DC. See dates and program details*. Attendance at one workshop is mandatory for the application procedure.
