DC USA, Skyland, Anacostia: A Big Day for Neighborhood Economic Development

3) Corcoran: The District granted $40 million in TIF assistance for the Frank Gehry Wing of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, located at 17th Street and New York Avenue NW. The Corcoran is the oldest art museum in the District. It is also houses the District’s only professional college of art and design. The project would add 140,000 square feet to the Corcoran’s existing structure adding space for 22 new galleries, a children’s art center, a 5,000 square foot library and research center, new shops and restaurants, as well as space for the College of Fine Arts.  The existing building will also be completely renovated during the 30-month construction period.
 
Benefits:

  • Creating an estimated 411 temporary construction jobs, an estimated additional 360 direct and indirect permanent full time jobs and $16.5 million in wages
  • Producing an annual estimated $4.2 million net fiscal benefit to the District  
  • Attracting an estimated 700,000 – 1,000,000 new visitors to the District

4) Anacostia Waterfront Corporation: The Council approved legislation as proposed by Mayor Williams to establish the Anacostia Waterfront Corporation (AWC).  This new public entity will be charged with leading the revitalization of the District’s Anacostia Waterfront. 

 

The AWC will coordinate the implementation of a 25-year plan that calls for the redevelopment of land currently either underutilized or not utilized at all.  Additionally, the AWC will also help coordinate efforts to a clean up the river with the goal of making the river swimable by 2025.

 

Guided by the AWI Framework plan, the Corporation will coordinate several tasks, including:

  • Encouraging and coordinating efforts and programs to clean up the river
  • Development and management of local land transferred to the corporation
  • Advocating for the AWI before federal, state, county and city agencies
  • Marketing and branding the waterfront and its associated development
  • Programming of educational, recreational and cultural maritime activities
  • Enhancing the waterfront open space and parkland system
