The District Hits the Bull’s Eye With Target

(Washington, DC) Mayor Anthony A. Williams announced today that Target has signed a purchase agreement to build its first store in the nation’s capital in Columbia Heights at 14th Street and Park road. The store will be 180,000 square feet and will be a full-sized, full-service store. Target is expected to open in late 2007 along with the rest of the DC USA development.

“You can’t look up without seeing a crane traversing our skyline—and we’ve made every effort to get those cranes into our communities,” said Williams.  “Just look around our city. We have 12,000 units of affordable housing—half them are East of the River; 4,500 units planned for the Anacostia Waterfront; a new Best Buy and Container Store in Tenleytown; the reality of a true retail center at Skyland; and negotiations for a Costco at Ft. Lincoln.”

It is expected that Target will bring 500 construction jobs, 1,000 direct permanent jobs, and $240 million in net direct new taxes over the first 20 years of the DC-USA development.  With an official Target agreement, other retailers will feel comfortable signing leases in the DC-USA development.

“I want to thank Councilmember Graham for his commitment and energy on working with me to make the District’s contribution through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) a reality,” said the Mayor. “ Let me also thank Tony Freeman for his leadership at the National Capital Revitalization Corporation and continuing to be a good steward of the public’s land.”
