(Washington, DC) – The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development today announced three teams have been selected for a short list of development companies vying for the right to redevelop the former Stevens Elementary School in West End neighborhood.

“The Stevens School has an incredible history,” said City Administrator Neil O. Albert. “We received a number of great proposals that we think will not only honor the building’s past, but will bring new vitality to the site and the surrounding community. These three teams have presented some interesting ideas and demonstrated the capacity to get the project done. ”

Located at 21st and L Streets NW, the Stevens school was built in 1868 and served as the first modern school in the District built for African American students. The short list teams’ plans include various combinations of new housing, office space, hotels and neighborhood-serving retail. The District issued a solicitation for development proposals late last year and bids were due in late March.

The short listed teams are led by:

  • EQR (Equity Residential)/ Neighborhood Development Corporation
  • Moddie Turay Company
  • Peebles Development LLC/The Walker Group

On June 11th the District will host a community meeting at nearby Francis-Stevens Education Campus -- 2425 N Street, NW – where the teams will discuss their proposals and the District will collect public comments.  The meeting will start at 6:30 pm.
